Earthquake Trail Offset
The Earthquake Trail at Point Reyes National Seashore is an easy 0.6-mile hike along the San Andreas Fault at what was originally considered the epicenter of the famous San Francisco Earthquake of April 18, 1906 (the epicenter is now generally thought to be near Daly City - reference). That earthquake, currently estimated at a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, ruptured along 300 miles (480 Km) of the fault. The maximum right-lateral offset from the earthquake exceeded 25 feet (7.6 meters) here at Point Reyes and at Shelter Cove, 150 miles (240 Km) to the northwest. The offset is seen here in the displacement of these two fence segments, which used to be connected.
