Golden Gate Photo - Alcatraz, The Rock Gallery
Fine Art Photography of Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay, California.
Alcatraz, also known as "The Rock", was once considered to be the toughest federal prison in America and housed the likes of infamous criminals Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. Its original name, La Isla de los Alcatraces (The Island of the Pelicans), came from Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775. Beginning in 1853, the island was used as a U.S. Army military fortress with the Pacific Coast's first operating lighthouse. It soon began the transition toward internship with the influx of civil war prisoners in 1861. In 1963, Alcatraz, the prison, was closed. Today, The Rock is one of the biggest tourist destinations and landmarks in the San Francisco Bay area, as well as an ecological preserve.
