Vermilion Cliff Sunrise

Vermilion Cliff Sunrise

The Vermilion Cliffs are the lower part of "The Grand Staircase" of northern Arizona and southern Utah. Here, sandstone of the Moenave Formation beams golden in the early morning sun. The iron-stained soil from the sandstone contrasts with the prickly pear cacti and juniper shrubs in the foreground.

Vermilion Cliff Petroglyphs

Vermilion Cliff Petroglyphs

The Hisatsinom - the "Ancient People" (formerly referred to as Anazasi) favored the Moenave Sandstone for their rock art due to the pervasive build up of black manganese oxide that was easily carved to expose the fresh red sandstone below. Unfortunately, this also makes these ancient artifacts susceptible to vandalism, which is why they are protected by law.

Monument Valley Overlook

Monument Valley Overlook

Taken from Muley Point Overlook on Cedar Mesa in Utah, looking south over the gorge of the San Juan River. The gorge is in Utah and carved through over 1,000 feet (300 meters) of the Pennsylvanian-age Hermosa Formation. The spires, buttes, and mesas in the distance belong to Monument Valley in Arizona. The Permian-age De Chelly Sandstone makes up the vertical columns of these formations.

Organ Pipe Cactus

Organ Pipe Cactus

Taken from the Victoria Mine Trail in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the organ pipe cactus is distinguished from the more recognized saguaro cactus by the junction of its many 'limbs' at ground level. The monument lies within the Sonoran Desert, along the Mexican border. In 1976, the United Nations designated the monument as an International Biosphere Reserve.
