Close-Up of Sandstone Bedding in the Sevehah Cliff

In this close-up, the apparent folding is not what it seems. Although there are some folds and faults in the cliff face, most of these beds are flat. However, they are dipping steeply toward the viewer (closer on the bottom, further on the top). The topographic surface of the cliff face is not as steep as the bedding planes, and where vertical rills (grooves carved by erosion) cut down through the beds, it gives the bedding planes a jagged, folded appearance. The difference can be seen by viewing the cliff face on its side from the peak of Mount Morrison.
